“Depression” by Abstract Artist, Daniel MacGregor

Abstract Artist | Fine Art Photographer

Abstract artist and fine art photographer Daniel MacGregor learned early on to break free of convention.

“My mother, a porcelain artist, always encouraged me to draw from within and to paint not what I see, but what I feel inside,” MacGregor said. “That lesson has shaped and driven my art ever since.”

MacGregor grew up in Minnesota and Iowa. He rejected coloring books in favor of loose blank pages that he could fill with his own drawings and colors to express his childhood thoughts and feelings.

“I took to the outdoors and drew upon nature. I started drawing typical things, like flowers, birds, trees, clouds, and animals around the yard,” MacGregor said. He continued to hone his skills through high school, winning a scholastic arts gold key award for a detailed drawing of a dragon hovering over a city skyline. By this time he also developed an interest in photography and proved a quick learner, earning honorable mentions for photographic work done while visiting New Zealand and Australia during the 1988 World Boy Scout Jamboree.

About Daniel MacGregor

Pure Bliss… To love a piece of work enough to buy it means more to me than the few dollars I may have made.

MacGregor went onto study art and photography at Mississippi College, majoring in Graphic Design. He moved to Brandon and spent several years working for an advertising firm before picking up his paintbrushes again to try for a career as an abstract artist and fine art photographer. He began painting professionally in 2008 and has garnered tremendous acclaim.

MacGregor spends hours walking, watching and taking in the everyday movement of city life and the quiet pulse of nature. Fascinated by color, he has developed a signature look that uses bold hues and unexpected color combinations to convey raw emotions and tell visual stories. His work primarily features cityscapes in an acrylic modern style but also includes modern landscapes and contemporary florals.

and has been exhibited in galleries and venues throughout Mississippi including Japonica Gallery, McComb Library, Brandon Library, Flowood Library, Cups in the Quarter on Lakeland Drive in Jackson, Brandon City Hall, Creole Cafe, MS Kidney Foundation (Uptown Drawdown), Make a Wish foundation, A Taste of Mississippi and Fondren Art Gallery to name a few.

While MacGregor’s success as an abstract artist and fine art photographer grows daily, he savors each individual sale as if it were his first. Though his work rivals that of much better known artists, he chooses to keep prices affordable, believing that everyone deserves a life enhanced by creativity.

“Pure bliss,” he says, describing the feeling each time a piece of his art sells. “To love a piece of work enough to buy it means more to me than the few dollars I may have made. I don’t ask a lot for my art – just that you love it enough to bring it home.”

MacGregor lives in Brandon’s Reservoir area with wife Alyson and daughters Ella and Leah. His abstract art is available online and by commission. He also offers original fine art photography.
